Qom, Iran, 7th April— Mojtaba Khamenei is reportedly in critical condition and receiving medical treatment in the city of Qom, according to an intelligence assessment cited by The Times, prompting renewed uncertainty over Iran’s leadership during the ongoing conflict.

A diplomatic memo, said to be based on U.S. and Israeli intelligence and shared with regional allies, indicates that Khamenei is unconscious and unable to carry out decision-making responsibilities. The document describes his condition as “severe” and states that he is currently being treated in Qom, a key religious center in Iran.

The report marks the first time his location has been publicly identified. Qom, widely regarded as a spiritual hub in Shia Islam, has long held political and religious significance within the country.

Burial Preparations Reportedly Underway

The same memo also references preparations for the burial of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in an airstrike at the outset of the war.

According to the assessment, intelligence agencies have observed construction activity in Qom consistent with the development of a large мавзoleum. The site is believed to include multiple burial spaces, potentially intended for members of the Khamenei family.

Limited Public Presence Since Appointment

Since being named Supreme Leader earlier this year, Mojtaba Khamenei has not made any verified public appearances. Statements attributed to him have been broadcast on Iranian state television, while a video circulating online — purportedly showing him in a military setting — has not been independently verified.

Iranian authorities have confirmed that Khamenei was injured in the same strike that reportedly killed several members of his family, including his father, wife, and one of his sons.

On March 30, a written message attributed to Khamenei was released through Iranian media, expressing gratitude to Iraq and senior Shia cleric Ali Sistani for their support during the conflict.

Questions Over Command and Control

The uncertainty surrounding Khamenei’s health has raised concerns about Iran’s command structure. Reports suggest that elements of the military, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, may be operating without a clearly visible central authority.

According to separate reporting, U.S. officials have acknowledged that Khamenei was wounded during the conflict, while Russian officials have stated that he remains in Iran but is avoiding public appearances.

Ongoing Uncertainty

The intelligence memo also suggests that Iranian authorities may be taking precautions around burial arrangements to prevent potential unrest or disruptions.

Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership following the death of his father, becoming Iran’s third Supreme Leader since the 1979 revolution. However, his absence from public view and limited official communication have continued to fuel speculation about both his health and the stability of Iran’s leadership during a critical period.
