March 9 — Turkey has deployed six F-16 fighter jets along with air defense systems to northern Cyprus amid growing regional tensions connected to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Monday.
According to the ministry, the deployment aims to strengthen the security of the Turkish Cypriot population on the island. Officials said the move forms part of a broader plan to enhance defense capabilities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and warned that Ankara could introduce additional measures if the situation escalates.
The development comes as military activity around Cyprus has increased in recent days. Several European nations have stepped up their presence near the strategically located island, which remains divided between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot administrations.
Security concerns intensified after a drone struck the British Akrotiri air base in Cyprus last week. Intelligence officials believe the drone may have been launched by Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group aligned with Iran.
Turkish authorities described the fighter jet deployment as part of a phased security strategy designed to reinforce regional stability while protecting Turkish interests and communities in northern Cyprus.
